We all have that list of things we know we should take care of someday.

Organizing important papers. Updating documents. Sorting through belongings. Talking with our children about our wishes. Maybe even thinking about whether our home will continue to meet our needs as we get older.

But life gets busy, and somehow, "someday" keeps getting pushed down the road.

Until something unexpected happens.

A fall. An illness. The loss of a spouse. A sudden change that leaves a family making decisions they never imagined making so quickly.

Over my 26 years in real estate, I've sat at many kitchen tables with families facing these situations. And one thing I've learned is that the hardest decisions are often the ones we haven't had time to talk about.

Preparing Doesn't Mean You're Planning to Move

Sometimes people hesitate to begin these conversations because they think it means giving up their independence or leaving a home they love.

It doesn't.

Preparing means understanding your options while you have the time and freedom to make decisions on your own terms.

Would your family know where to find important documents? Who to contact about your home? What your wishes are if you need help?

Have you thought about what you'd want your next chapter to look like if life changed unexpectedly?

You don't need all the answers today. Just somewhere to begin.

Two Opportunities to Start Getting Prepared

This November, I'll continue Mary's Journey, my educational seminar series inspired by my grandmother, with a free program called Preparing for the Unexpected.

We'll discuss organizing important information, preparing your home, available resources and conversations with loved ones before decisions become urgent.

You have two opportunities to join me:

Wednesday, November 11, at 10:00 AM

Grafton-Midview Public Library

Thursday, November 12, at 6:00 PM

Amherst

Each attendee will receive a complimentary Life Essentials Binder, designed to organize information loved ones may need in an unexpected situation.

With sections for personal and professional contacts, banking information, debts, credit cards, insurance policies, digital accounts, funeral wishes and more, it's a practical tool to begin getting organized before a crisis. Sensitive information should always be stored securely.

I especially encourage you to bring someone you love. A spouse, adult child, sibling or trusted family member can benefit from hearing the same information and beginning these conversations together.

You don't need to be considering a move to attend. This is about being prepared for whatever life brings.

The Best Time Is Before You Have To

My grandmother Mary's journey taught me that knowing what might be best for someone and being ready to make that decision are two very different things.

That's why these conversations matter.

You can't prepare for everything life may bring. But you can make the unexpected a little easier for yourself and the people you love.

Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give our families is simply having the conversation.
