When Staying No Longer Feels Easy: A Personal Reflection

After conversations about stay, buy, or build, I often find that the next question isn’t immediate.
It’s quieter than that.
“How do I know when it’s time to start thinking about a change?”
A Personal Reflection
This is something that feels personal to me.
My grandmother stayed in her home for many years. It was familiar, comfortable, and filled with memories — the kind of place that didn’t feel easy to leave.
Like many people, she wasn’t ready to make a change when the idea first came up.
And that’s understandable.
Letting go of a home isn’t just about the house — it’s about everything it represents.
When Things Begin to Shift
What I’ve come to see, both personally and professionally, is that the shift usually doesn’t happen all at once.
It shows up in small ways:
spaces that feel like more work than they used to
rooms that no longer get used
a sense that things could feel a little easier
It’s not a problem.It’s just a change.
The Part I Wish Had Been Different
Looking back, one of the things I wish is that my grandmother had given herself more time to explore her options.
Not to make a quick decision —but simply to understand what those options were while she still had more flexibility.
By the time a change became necessary, the process felt more urgent and the choices were more limited.
There’s a Difference Between Rushing and Preparing
This is something I talk about often now.
You don’t have to rush into a decision.
But there is real value in preparing early.
Preparing looks like:
having conversations
understanding what your home might be worth
thinking about what kind of home would feel easier
Not because you need to act —but because it gives you options.
What Comes Next
For some people, staying is still the right choice — with a few thoughtful changes.
For others, moving or building creates a better fit for how they live now.
There isn’t one right answer.
A Different Kind of Starting Point
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this:
The best time to start thinking about your next step isn’t when you have to.
It’s when you begin to wonder.
That space — between not ready and not sure — is where the best decisions are made.
