What You Should Be Doing To Downsize In 2024!

This is the time of the year that most people start to think about the Holiday season and not as much about real estate. However, if you are thinking about downsizing in 2024 or helping a family member downsize in 2024 now is the time to start the process. Moving can be very traumatic for older adults, especially those that have lived in their current home for decades and raised their family there. Leaving the home behind is both physically and emotionally difficult, but is a decision most older adults will eventually have to make. Downsizing is a process and one that can not start early enough. Here are some things you should be doing now!

  • Reach out to a Realtor, specifically an agent who is a Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES). An SRES is a Realtor trained by the National Association of Realtors to specialize with the process of downsizing. They are trained to not only deal with the financial aspect of selling your home but also with the mental and emotional process as well. A SRES can suggest a team of specialist to work with you to help you prepare your home for a sale.

  • Meet with your Realtor. Now is a great time to meet with your Realtor so they can help you prepare your home for the selling process. They can let you know if your home is inspection ready or if there are items that need to be addressed. They can also help you determine if it’s better to sell as is or make repairs. As well as which repairs will help you sell for more money.

  • Talk to your family. With the Holidays approaching it is a great time to talk with your family about downsizing. It’s also a great time to talk with your children about getting their items out of your basement or attic.

  • Start on your honey do list to get your home ready to sell. Maybe you need to focus on decluttering and donating items winter time in Ohio is a great time to start that process.

  • Consider attending Downsizing 103: Organizing Your Personal Documents & Preparing For The Unexpected. This workshop will address getting your personal documents in order for your loved ones or family in case of an emergency. It includes a complimentary binder with sections to help you organize your finances, insurance, assets, contacts, and funeral arrangements.
